Red Valley vs Rainbow Mountain

Red Valley or Rainbow Mountain, or both? The extra walk and fee, what each viewpoint shows, when to skip the Red Valley, and Palccoyo as the gentler choice.

Updated November 2026

The Red Valley is not an alternative to Rainbow Mountain: it is the walk on from its top. From the Vinicunca viewpoint the Red Valley viewpoint is about 1.1 km further along the path, around half an hour each way at about 5,000 m, with its own fee of 20 to 30 soles in cash. If you reach the top of Vinicunca with energy left and the sky is clear, it is worth it: you look down a valley of rust-red hills with a fraction of the crowd. If the climb itself is what worries you, the choice is not the Red Valley but Palccoyo, a gentler set of striped hills near Checacupe.

Distances on foot measured along the paths on our maps. Heights: Peru’s tourism inventory lists Vinicunca at 5,036 m, other government sources up to 5,200 m; PromPeru gives Palccoyo 4,900 m and its walk time. The Vinicunca fee is the inventory’s and PromPeru’s 2026 figure; the Red Valley and Palccoyo fees are from the listings, checked November 2026.

Is the Red Valley worth the extra walk?

For most people who make it to the top, yes. The main Vinicunca viewpoint is where every group stops, and it is crowded at the hour the morning tours arrive. The Red Valley is a short walk on along the ridge, and the view changes completely: instead of one striped slope you look down a whole valley in shades of rust and brick. Fewer groups make the walk, so it is usually quieter.

What it costs you is effort, time and cash. The walk is short on the map, but it is at about 5,000 m, so it feels longer, and you walk back the same way. The fee is separate from the Rainbow Mountain ticket. And on a group day the guide sets the time: Chullos Travel Peru asks you to say before the hike starts that you want the Red Valley, and PVTravel's guide shows you the way but stays with the Rainbow Mountain group, so you walk it on your own and rejoin them.

When to skip it

  • You reach the top with a headache or out of breath at rest. Altitude illness is the reason to turn back, not to push on; see the altitude guide.
  • The weather is closing in. Cloud takes the colour out of the view, and in the wet months snow and lightning are real hazards on the ridge.
  • Your group is already heading down. The van does not wait indefinitely; agree the time with the guide.

If you know beforehand that you want the Red Valley, pick a day that includes it: PVTravel's hike includes both entrances, and the ATV days ride through the valley and walk to Vinicunca from there.

Palccoyo instead

Palccoyo is the other “rainbow mountain” south of Cusco, near the town of Checacupe. PromPeru puts it at about 4,900 m and its viewpoint at about 45 minutes on foot with little effort, against a trek of about three hours for Vinicunca. You see three smaller striped hills, the snow peak of Ausangate in the distance, and, as an option on most Palccoyo days, the Stone Forest, a field of rock spires a short walk away. What you do not see is the Red Valley: it lies beside Vinicunca, not Palccoyo.

Palccoyo still sits at altitude, so the advice on acclimatising applies; PromPeru’s own page asks for at least two days of acclimatisation before going.
