Red Valley ATV Tour

Red Valley ATV tours from Cusco: how the quad-bike days ride through the valley, how much walking is left, prices, and who should ride.

Updated November 2026

The ATV days come at the Red Valley from the other side. Instead of climbing to Vinicunca and walking on, you ride a quad bike from a community on the Pitumarca side through or along the Red Valley, then walk the last part to Rainbow Mountain, about 40 minutes in most listings, and ride back. It means far less walking at altitude, though not none, and it costs more: from $59 in current promotion (usually $65) on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026), plus the entrance fee in cash. Several operators ask for some experience on an ATV and for travel insurance that covers it.

How the ATV days work

Map of the area south of Vinicunca: the trailhead walk to Vinicunca and on to the Red Valley viewpoint, the Red Valley (Valle Rojo) stretching south, and the village of Hanchipacha to the east
Vinicunca, the Red Valley viewpoint, and the Red Valley (Valle Rojo) running south towards the Pitumarca side, with Hanchipacha to the east.

Vinicunca has two ways in, one from Cusipata and one from Pitumarca, and the valley lies on the Pitumarca side. Peru’s tourism inventory confirms that quad bikes can be ridden up a track on that side, from the Cayllahuire sector of the Pampachiri community. The day runs much like a hiking day until breakfast in Cusipata; then the van drives on to the ATV base, where you get a helmet, a safety talk and a few minutes of practice.

  1. The ride. World Explorer Peru starts from the community of Laya and rides about 25 minutes towards the Red Valley; Viajes Speedy rides about an hour through the valley to its viewpoint.
  2. The walk. From where the bikes park it is about 40 minutes on foot to Rainbow Mountain in most listings, back the same way.
  3. The Red Valley. On the ATV days it is part of the route rather than an extra: you ride through or beside it, and several stop at its viewpoint.
  4. The ride out, and lunch. Back to the van and a buffet lunch in Cusipata, then Cusco by late afternoon.

Who should ride

  • Ride if the walk worries you more than the cost, you have ridden a quad bike before, or you want the Red Valley as part of the day rather than an extra at the end.
  • Walk instead if you have never ridden one: World Explorer Peru and America Explorer Peru ask for previous ATV experience, and both ask for travel insurance that covers adventure activities. Single or double bikes are offered, so a nervous rider can sit behind a confident one.
  • Check the limits. The listings set their own age and weight limits; World Explorer Peru’s, for example, rules out riders over 95 kg.

The bike does not take away the altitude. You still walk at about 5,000 m, and the ride itself is cold. The altitude guide applies just the same.

Rainbow Mountain by ATV without the Red Valley

Some quad-bike days go only to Rainbow Mountain and skip the Red Valley. For those, rainbow-mountain-tour-atv.com covers the Vinicunca ATV days in depth, with their routes and prices.
