Best Time to Visit the Red Valley

When to visit the Red Valley and Rainbow Mountain: the dry season, the wet months and snow, the cold at 5,000 m, and what to wear and bring on the day.

Updated November 2026

The best time to visit the Red Valley is the dry season, April to October, the months Peru’s official tourism inventory recommends. Then the sky is most often clear, the red and the stripes of Vinicunca are at their sharpest, and the trail is dry; the price is the cold, with frequent frost and about -5 C at the mountain before dawn. From December to February, when more than half of Cusco’s yearly rain falls, cloud can hide the colours and snow can cover the trail and close it. Whatever the month, dress for winter at the top.

September to November145 mm; the rains return towards the endMostly dry early, wetter by November

Rain: Peru’s weather service SENAMHI, Cusco station, seasonal totals 1971-2000 (about 707 mm a year). Frost: SENAMHI, usually April to September, most often in June and July.

Map south-east of Cusco: the road to Cusipata and up to the Vinicunca trailhead, 105.5 km, with Checacupe, Pitumarca, Vinicunca and the Red Valley, and Palccoyo to the south
The figures above are for Cusco; Vinicunca and the Red Valley are about 1,600 m higher, and colder.

The Cusco figures are a city reference: the mountain is far higher. Peru’s tourism inventory gives the temperature there as ranging from about -5 C at night to 13 C by day, and SENAMHI notes that snow is most frequent above 3,800 m. The UK government puts Peru’s rainy season at November to May and warns that snow, rockslides and mudslides can cut mountain roads and walking routes.

The wet months and snow

In the rainy season the trip can still run, but plan for it to change. In February 2026 Cusco’s regional tourism office considered closing the trail after heavy snow covered the mountain and bridges on the access roads fell, and in earlier years snow has restricted access. Lightning is a real danger on the exposed ridge in storms. PromPeru adds that roads are much slower in the rainy season. If your dates fall between December and March, book with free cancellation (every listing on this site allowed it up to 24 hours ahead, checked November 2026) and keep a spare day in Cusco.

What to wear and bring

  • Layers for winter at the top: a warm fleece or down jacket, a hat and gloves, even in the dry season. You start in the cold before dawn and warm up as you climb.
  • A rain jacket or poncho, all year.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: the sun is strong at 5,000 m. Inka Altitude makes sunglasses compulsory on its day.
  • Walking shoes or boots with grip for a dirt path that can be muddy or frozen.
  • Water and snacks, which you can also buy at breakfast in Cusipata.
  • Soles in cash for the entrances, a horse and the toilets; see the entrance fees.

On an ATV day add a scarf or buff against the wind. If you are prone to car sickness, take something for the drive: the last stretch to the trailhead is a rough dirt road.
